Interesting things About Moncton and
Dieppe
Moncton Tidal Bore
A
scenicphenomenon caused by the surging Bay of Fundy tides, the
highest in the world, the Bore occurs twice daily. The higher
waters in the Bay cause the water in the placid Petitcodiac River
to roll backupstream in one wave, which can range in height from
three cm (one in.) to 60 cm (24 in.). Just as spectacular is the
rapid and dramatic change in the river itself. At low tide the
muddy river bottom is often visible, but within an hour of
the arrival of the Bore,
the water level rises some 7.5 m (25 ft.) to fill the river to its
banks. The Tidal Bore can be observed from Bore Park, Main street.

Did you Know??
On February 8,1946, the village of Leger’s Corner
was named Dieppe in memory of the 913 Canadian soldiers killed
during the allied troops landing on the beaches of Dieppe, France
on August 19,1942. Dieppe was later incorporated as a town on
January 1st,1952.
Moncton,
New Brunswick, originally spelled Monckton, was so called in 1855
in honor ofthe British commander who captured Fort Beausejour in
1755. However aclerical error at the time the town was incorporated
resulted in the mis-spelling of the community's
name.
Moncton
was earlier known as Le Coude (the elbow) by the Micmacs and
Terre-Rouge by the French Acadians (for the red banks of the
Petticodiac River which runs through the heart of the city). The
Philadelphia covenantors who arrived in 1766 called it The
Bend.The
settlement was incorporated as a town in 1855 and Moncton became a
city on the 23rd of April, 1890.
The Capitol Theatre is one of only eight of its kind in
Canada. When the restoration of the downtown movie theatre began in
1992, evidence of extensive stenciling, gold leafing, and murals
were discovered after probing off four coats of paint! This find
influenced the decision to restore the Capitol to its original
lookof 1922

Whyare
the tides so high? First of all, the Bay of Fundy is shaped
like a 290-km (180-mi.) funnel — wide at one end and
gradually tapering at the other. The gradual tapering and
shallowing constricts the tidal flow into the bay. Secondly, the
Bay of Fundy experiences something call the “Seiche
Effect” — similar to the wave action produced by
sloshing water back and forth in a bathtub, each wave higher than
the previous one. It is this comparison which led to the Bay of
Fundy being called “the world’s largest
bathtub”,with tides rising to the height of a
four-storeybuilding.

History
Moncton was incorporated as a Town in 1855 when ship building
was the main industry. However, the advent of steam and iron ships
soon brought the prosperity to an end and Moncton reverted to
village status in 1862. Almost ten years later, Moncton became the
Atlantic Regional Headquarters for the Intercolonial Railway and in
1875 became a Town once more. This revival explains the civic
motto, RESURGO, which means I rise again. Moncton became a City on
April 23, 1890.
